Airton Mill was originally the site of a corn mill owned by Bolton Abbey and was part of the Manor of Calton. It expanded into cotton spinning in approximately 1786 and work completed on the current building in 1839. Cotton production ceased in 1904 and the building was also used by a sheet metal and general engineering business. In 1942 Reckitt & Coleman bought the mill and used it to produce Dettol.
