Keighley Area Guide

The town of Keighley is situated around 11 miles north west of Bradford. It is a convenient commuting distance from Leeds and Bradford yet sits within a wild and wonderful landscape commonly known as Bronte Country.

Popular villages close to the town include Steeton, Oakworth, Oxenhope and Haworth. Whilst these villages are all part of the Keighley district, they each have their own distinct identity and strong communities.

Keighley town offers a wide array of shopping outlets including independent retailers, well-known high street chains and several large supermarkets. It also has a library, a large leisure centre with swimming pool, a cinema and a host of bars, cafes and restaurants. 

For commuters, good roads provide easy access to Leeds, Bradford and Colne and their links to the M1, M62 and M65. A very good train service operates from Keighley station with journey times of around 20 minute to Bradford and half an hour to Leeds. Keighley is also extremely well placed for speedy access via road and rail to Skipton, the gateway to the Yorkshire Dales.

There is a wide selection of good state primary schools in Keighley and the surrounding area. At secondary level, popular school choices include Oakbank, a Foundation co-educational comprehensive school; and The Holy Family Catholic School. Bradford Grammar School is also popular as it is served by a very convenient rail link. Beechcliffe School is a co-educational, community special school catering for pupils aged 11 to 19 years who have a wide range of special educational needs.

Cliffe Castle Park

A jewel in Keighley, Cliffe Castle is the former home of a wealthy industrialist which has been converted to a delightful museum with beautiful grounds for everyone to enjoy all year round. It's free to enter and free to park so it's a perfect place to drop into whenever the mood takes you. In 2016 work started on a 4.5 million lottery-funded renovation of the Park. with works including the restoration of the park’s overall landscape with a full refurbishment of the fountains, pond and water features, as well as an upgrade of the bandstand, a new cafeteria and a new glass palm house will be built to replicate the designs of the original structure.

Silsden Golf Club

This is a friendly golf club which welcomes players of all abilities. With spectacular views of the Aire Valley, it is a lovely place to enjoy a round.

Haworth Village

Situated above the Worth Valley and nesteled in the Pennine moors, Haworth is internationally famous for its connection with the Bronte sisters who wrote most of their famous works while living at the Haworth Parsonage. The village itself offers a picturesque setting which is perfect for weekend shopping and lunching. A host of independent pubs, cafes and stores line the cobbled streets and include everything from unique gift shops, vintage clothing, toy shops, bakeries and even a chocolatiers!
