Thirsk

The market town of Thirsk is situated in the Vale of Mowbray which lies between the stunning Yorkshire Moors and the Yorkshire Dales national parks. The urban centres of York, Teesside and Harrogate are within easy reach via the A19 and A168 and the East Coast mainline railway station offers access further afield. 

Other notable local market towns in the area include Bedale, Masham, Helmsley, Ripon, Easingwold and the county town of Northallerton.

Thirsk is full of period charm with its cobbled market square and clock tower and the town is well known for being home to the famous vet and author, James Herriot who based the town of Darrowby in his books on Thirsk. The popularity of his work lead to the creation of the TV series All Creatures Great and Small.

Over the years, Thirsk has seen much change and now boasts a range of both local and national retail outlets in addition to a leisure centre, library and a cinema.

Both primary and secondary education are available in the town with the well renowned Queen Marys and Cundall Manor private schools within easy reach.

Located to the East of Thirsk this stunning ruin of a Cistercian monastery is nestled away in some of England’s finest countryside and is a perfect place to take in the changing seasons on a weekend walk. 

Castle Garth

This town centre park was once the site of Thirsk’s Motte and Bailey castle, now it provides a central area perfect for relaxing in the summer sun with a cold drink or an ice cream and a pleasant green space for workers of the town to sit and enjoy a sandwich and some fresh air on a lunchtime. 

White Rose Book Café

This award-winning independent book and coffee shop is a fantastic addition for Thirsk residents. Not only selling books they also stock a large range of gifts, toys and celebration cards and for those popping in for a coffee or a bite to eat they have both inside seating and an outside terrace with free wifi available. They hold regular events and for families, they run a regular children’s storytime every week.
