A beautiful cottage, parts of which date back to the 1840’s, that has been lovingly extended by its owners over the last 18 years is now on the market.

Bents Cottage, Fewston is for sale with Dacres for £745,000. Sally and Clive Robinson moved to the charming character filled three/four bedroom family home in 2001, and over the years have extended it, creating a light-filled large open plan kitchen, as well as adding a utility/pantry, office and downstairs shower room. The couple also transformed a conservatory into a delightful garden room/occasional bedroom.

Sally said: “It’s such a lovely home. Originally an old shepherd’s cottage, a second floor was built in the 1970’s and the attractive wooden panelling in the hallway and sitting room was also added around that time, along with repeated tiny carvings of an oak leaf, an acorn and a mouse.

“Everything we have done has focused on creating space and a really flexible layout with a selection of rooms, ideal for every season and occasion. From the sunny glass garden room, which doubles as a fourth bedroom for guests, with access to the ground floor shower room, to the cosy sitting room, which has a wood burning stove. We installed an Aga in the kitchen, which is the real heart of the home, and also laid an attractive stone floor with feature fossils in it. All of the internal doors were replaced with fumed oak doors.

“Outside we built a large double garage, totally in keeping with the property, which could be extended even further into an annex, subject to planning consents. We also installed a timber and stone greenhouse, a matching potting shed and a summer house, and created vegetable and fruit gardens. We have been able to grow and produce everything from artichokes to aubergines, soft fruits, and pears and apples in the small orchard area. We have also raised sheep and chickens here in the past, after renting a neighbouring field. It would be perfect for a family wanting to grow their own produce and the garden is a really safe place for children to explore and enjoy.”

Tim Usherwood, from Dacres Otley, agrees that the gardens at Bents Cottage are a huge feature. He said: “To complement the wonderful interior are the stunning landscaped gardens which are found to all four sides. They are split into various areas, some formal, some less so, and include a westerly facing sitting position that is a real delight. Bents Cottage enjoys a lovely rural setting with fine views, surrounded by open countryside in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and it’s close to Fewston and Swinsty reservoirs, yet easily accessible for Otley and the A59, which provides access to Harrogate and Skipton.”

Sally added: “It’s a great location within a lovely community with two churches, and three pubs that are all walkable. The Washburn Heritage Centre is also close by, which hosts all kinds of events and the reservoirs, of course, are a huge attraction. The fact that you can drive into Harrogate in under 15 minutes, and get to Leeds Bradford Airport in 30 minutes is also a major benefit.”
