FORMER MANOR HOUSE STABLES FOR SALE
On Knaresborough’s Waterside, Old Manor Barn was built in the grounds of the Old Manor House, which was originally a hunting lodge for King John in about 1200. The chequered house features on many postcards and images of Knaresborough and is the place where a civil war treaty was signed and where Oliver Cromwell is said to have stayed during the four-month siege of Knaresborough Castle.
Marketed by our Knaresborough office, as the town’s leading estate agency, Old Manor Barn is for sale for £675,000. Its owner Michelle Rose has lived there for 25 years. She said: “It is quite possible our home was the place that Oliver Cromwell’s horse rested its head – so that’s its tenuous claim to fame! The former stables were converted by a lady who lived in the Manor Cottage opposite when the owner of the main house was running it as a restaurant. She bought this property and the vegetable gardens in front and converted it into a beautiful house and garden. When she put it up for sale in 1994 we were instantly attracted to the home, having been newly refurbished, it had a really comfortable and contemporary feel and its location was idyllic.
“Over the last 25 years we have made a number of improvements including installing a stunning new kitchen, en suite bathrooms and a fully fitted office. We have developed a lovely garden, which has a central pathway leading down to a dwarf stone wall adjoining the river, where we enjoy full boating and riparian rights. The patio is a real delight, and was created from the original stone roof of the stables. We have a lovely quiet and private aspect, yet we are so central. From our bedroom we have the very best views of the bridge and the castle – it’s a real gem.”
Senior Associate Nick Alcock, who is the branch manager at the Knaresborough office, said: “Full of character in this prime residential location, Old Manor Barn takes full advantage of the stunning views over the River Nidd. Inside it’s a delight, the living room has oak floors, a feature fireplace with a wood burning stove that also opens into kitchen, and double French doors that open out to the garden.
“It has a stunning luxury dining kitchen with an Aga at its heart, complete with oak flooring and double opening French doors that give breath-taking views over the elevated terrace and the river beyond. From the reception hall there is also a fully fitted study. There are three bedrooms - the master has a modern en-suite shower room - and a staircase leads down to the lower ground floor landing where there are two further double bedrooms and a ‘Jack and Jill’ bathroom.
“Due to the home’s location, its attractive interior and layout we are confident it will appeal to a variety of buyers. The fact it also has an integral garage in this riverside location is another real selling point.”
